Walk the catwalk

Updated: Apr 22, 2018

Don’t worry about what you say, worry about what you do! Out with the bad habits and in with the new. It’s important you establish a healthy lifestyle for your child and that starts with you.

I know, it’s a lovely rhyme, I’ve gotten pretty good at them since that’s all I sing all day long.

The good thing about forcing yourself to read those over-kill baby books, is that you occasionally find something worth retaining. One thing I learnt, apart from how the books were a waste of my time, is that in the first 6 weeks your baby thinks you are both the same person. They rely on you to fulfil their needs of hunger, tiredness and hygiene.

You make the effort to buy the most comfy, super-absorbent nappies as well as fragrance-free, chemical-free wipes, so why don’t you feed yourself with highly nutritious food to make your breast milk as nourishing as possible? And formula feeders, you might think you can eat what ever you want but your baby is paying close attention to you and when they start eating solids they want what you’re having.

Lets go back even earlier, during pregnancy you gave up a lot of tasty favourites to make sure your baby had the best chance at life. It’s exactly the same now! Give them the best chance at living a long and healthy life by helping them avoid food allergies, food intolerances, obesity, cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes and more, by simply paying attention to what you eat.

The same principle applies to exercise. Start with getting yourself to a healthy fitness level before falling pregnant then you’re more likely to carry that routine throughout your whole pregnancy. By being fit during pregnancy, not only are you helping yourself, you are building a stronger and fitter heart for your unborn child. Your next job is to continue this active lifestyle with your child once they’re born, and they are more likely to carry these great healthy habits throughout adolescence and adulthood.

Babies, toddles and children, they’re all parrots, not only in words but actions too. Good news though, because of their parrot-like nature you can pretty much set them up for good. You are your baby’s role model. So start paving their future in the right direction.
